Managing Heating During Power Outages

In its May 2026 winter outlook, the Australian Energy Market Operator forecast stable winter conditions for the National Electricity Market. More than 3,000MW of generation and battery-storage capacity had been added since the previous winter.

That system-level outlook does not eliminate local outages caused by storms, fallen trees, damaged poles or distribution-line faults.

Heat pumps stop during an outage unless connected to a suitable backup system. Many ducted or fan-assisted gas heaters also stop because their controls, ignition systems and fans require electricity.

Generator and Battery Safety

Portable petrol and diesel generators produce carbon monoxide and must operate outdoors in a ventilated area, away from windows and vents. They must never be used inside homes, garages or other enclosed spaces.
